Resins – Jet Milling and Flash Drying |
Resins are natural materials formed by plant secretions, but they can also be a synthetic material developed to mimic the characteristics of the natural variety. Over the years, Fluid Energy has had the opportunity to work with both types of resins. Often sticky, heat sensitive, and possibly explosive, processing dry powder resins present multiple challenges. Our jet mills and flash driers are uniquely suited to managing those challenges.
The many uses for resins are vast and often unique. They are found in adhesives, coatings, plastics, and even printing media. Other applications of resins include food additives, perfumes, and medicines. Each application requires specific particle size and moisture levels that Fluid Energy equipment can optimize without damaging or degrading the resin. The product contact surfaces in our equipment are tailored to the materials being process. PTFE liners are used with sticky materials. Highly polished stainless steel liners are used with food additives and medicines. We even offer wear resistant liners for materials that abrade the conta ct surfaces. |

Resins can be ground in one of the three (3) styles of styles of Fluid Energy jet mills (Jet-O-Mizer, MicroJet, RotoJet) without generating heat. This allows for control of the particle size down to a very fine level, less than 10 microns, without heating up the powder like mechanical mill. Heat can adversely affect the properties of the powder as well as lead to softening or stickiness inside the mill. We avoid this situation by maintaining ambient conditions throughout the milling process, even chilling the compressed gas when needed. In addition, the MicroJet and Jet-O-Mizer mills have no moving parts making them particularly easy to clean and sanitize.

The Fluid Energy ThermaJet is a recirculating loop style drier that has a truly short retention time in the heat affected zone. Short enough to allow for the processing of heat sensitive materials down to very dry moisture levels without softening or melting. Our driers use a dynamic, turbulent flow to maintain particle size, while driving off surface moisture instantly. Materials are in and out of the drier before any damage is done.
Our Test Center and Engineering departments work closely with the Toll Processing division to optimize all processes, including resins and other heat sensitive materials. This allows us to collaborate with customers to jointly develop a process that can be conducted in our plant or at their facility without consuming too much material or time. Often those processes include multiple steps like milling, blending, and packaging or crushing, fine grinding, and packaging.
